After the Communist victory, Wang Qiyao keeps to bask in the decadent pleasures of the Shanghai bourgeoisie, secretly enjoying mahjong in the course of the antirightist crusade and changing enthusiasts at the eve of the Cultural Revolution. She reemerges within the Eighties as a purveyor of "old Shanghai," simply to develop into embroiled in a tragedy that echoes the Hollywood noirs of her youth.
